Prayer Request

Remember back in January when I went to Wisconsin for a blogger's weekend? I met Katie there and one of my favorite memories of the weekend was standing in the kitchen on the last day talking to her. We'd only met the day before but she had this way about her that was so warm and inviting - like talking to a girlfriend you've known your whole life. I remember we talked about our husbands' search for employment. Her trust in God to provide for their family was woven into her words in a way that was so encouraging to me since PapaBear had been out of work for a year at that point.

Katie and her family could use some encouragement right now as they learn more about their unborn baby' condition. Would you take a moment and visit her blog and offer up a prayer on her behalf? Thanks!

I've got the joy joy joy joy down in my heart


This past week while grocery shopping she belted out the words to that song. Up and down the aisles.... and who was I to stop her?

I LOVE that she isn't shy about loving Jesus. I love that her favorite song is Away in a Manger, that she sings, "This is the Day" whenever the mood strikes her.



The one that gets me every time is when she sings "Come Into My Heart"

Do you know that one? It goes like this:

Come into my heart.
Come into my heart.
Come into my heart Lord Jesus.
Come in today.
Come in to stay.
Come into my heart Lord Jesus.

We sing these songs every time we get in the car to drive somewhere and since we live in the country we drive everywhere. It's a great way to start our day - makes our last minutes together before dropping Sam off at school full of praise and worship. Nothing beats that!

Whenever the opportunity presents itself I talk to the kids about what it means to ask Jesus into our hearts. That if we ask Him to, He will forgive our sins and we can live with Him in Heaven forever. He died on the cross for us - something that we thank Him for every night during our "Thankfuls" (The kids say one thing they are thankful for and one thing they want to ask for forgiveness for. They always say "God & Jesus" and something related to the day. We've been doing it for over a year and it's a great way to end our day.)

Tonight as I was wiping toothpaste off of Julia's face she said something about her heart being cold (not exactly sure what that meant????) so I asked her what could warm her up and she said that Jesus could. The door was open once again for us to talk about what it meant for Jesus to come into her heart.

"That will make my heart nice and warm!"

3 in 1

Part of our Beth Moore homework this week was to get up at dawn and read and reflect on three passages.

Genesis 8:22
As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter,
day and night will never cease."

I got the biggest smile on my face when I saw the sun spots created by taking a photo directly into the sun as I was completing my quiet time that morning. You see, we are studying the fruit of the Spirit.

As we prepare to enter Holy week I am more aware of the Holy Spirit interceding on my behalf than ever before. Each day I am pouring out my thoughts, desires, confessions, dreams through prayer so that there is room in my heart for the Holy Spirit to pour in and fill me up with Christ's teachings and His love.

The result? I am able to pour forth (2 Corinthians 3:5-6 5Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. 6He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.)

Dear Lord, thank you that your mercies are new every morning. Thank you that the Spirit of the Living God intercedes on our behalf. May we never forget the price your Son paid in order to conquer to grave.
Amen.

my list

I made a list when we got home from hearing Sam sing with his
classmates at church this morning.

It started with a reminder to email a few people who I owe emails.
Somewhere in the middle I wrote clean our bedroom.
I added gather tax documents and post about a blog book that arrived on Friday.

I got to the end of the piece of paper with plan menu.
I flipped it over and added #24, do last day of Bible study homework and #25, update checkbook.

Then I put my pencil down.

And left the list where I would find it tomorrow.

Today is a day of rest. My list can wait.

All of those things that were swirling around in my heads are now safely recorded on my list.

They will all still be there tomorrow

Today is a day of rest.

I will rest in His faithfulness.

I will rest in His goodness.

I will spend time with my family.

I will rest in my bed.

May you find some time to rest on this Lord's day as well.

For the business of the week will always be there. I will face it tomorrow refreshed and renewed.

Pneumonia - a play by play

Before I forget the details of Sam's sudden illness I want to record them here. I'm already mad at myself enough for not keeping up the kids' health notebooks that I started when they were babies (small notebooks to record illnesses, medications, well child measurements - nothing fancy but it's hard to remember who had x-rays when, who was the one with croup etc... so I had planned to keep a written record for when the doctor asked health history questions)

For some reason Sam has managed to be sick every time it's his turn to bring home the snack bucket from school. He should have brought it home yesterday. Instead he spent the day coughing and coughing and coughing. He started with a temp on Tuesday the 2nd after nap and was very lethargic and miserable. He threw up twice from coughing so hard. I called the nurse when his temp got to 102 under his arm, thinking that it meant 103. I couldn't remember if she said to call if it got to 103 or if that was when we should bring him in. Anyone else second guess themselves constantly when your kids are sick?

So I called. Just in case. Oh it's not add a degree under the arm, it's subtract a degree. Really? That's not what I remember, but you're the professional so I guess I'm wrong. Thank goodness it's not as bad as I thought.

I slept at the foot of his twin bed that night. If you can call it sleep that is. He coughed all night long. No school for him. I took Julia to school on 45 minutes of sleep. Sam's teacher called to check up on him. I let Sam sleep in the chair for nap time. He slept 15 minutes.
We watch movie upon movie upon movie until bedtime. All day he's eaten 5 pretzels, a few bites of cornbread, & a little applesauce.

Seven pm and he's in bed. I have a video monitor set up 3 feet from his face. I have hardly left his side except to take Julia to school. I go up and check on him at 9pm. He's breathing hard, I can see his neck pulsating fast. I think of my friend Jennifer and get a small glimpse into her past. I take his pulse. 162. Is that too high for a five year old? Is that a sign of something that needs attention right away? (Mine can be as low as 50 and rarely gets above 60) I couldn't find the answer online so I called our insurance company's nurse line. By the time I got through the list of symptoms her recommendation was to call 911. (Oh and she said that it's add a degree under the arm.)

We decide that it's faster to just drive him ourselves. I cross paths with an ambulance three miles from our house. Extra glad we decided to drive ourselves. We arrive at the ER and a triage nurse gives me the 3rd degree on why we are there. In not a nice way. Whatever.

We get past the paperwork stage and into the room where that same nurse takes Sam's vitals. Temp of 104. Pulse Ox - a titch over what it needs to be in order to be admitted.
He's coughing and is moaning. He doesn't like for me to jostle him in anyway. I have to be careful as I stand with him. There's no way he can walk. The nurse shows he's human after all and hands my baby a kleenex and offers to carry Sam's blanket and my purse.

He leads us to are put in room number 9. Within a few minutes a nurse comes in and gives him Tylenol and Motrin. Didn't know you could have both at the same time...Then things move really really r e a l l y s l o w. Poor Sam is shivering despite being covered with his ThomasTheTrain blanket. I can see that he's having a hard time breathing and that his heart is racing.

They know what they are doing - they wouldn't leave us alone for 20 minutes if it were that bad. Right? They must be super busy despite only 4 cars in the parking lot. I ask a nurse who comes in eventually if it's good for him to be waiting this long in his condition. She agrees that someone should come in asap. We see a doc who orders a chest x-ray. I carry my baby down the hall to radiology. I hold his hand while the tech takes two pics of his lungs. He asks for a drink of water. Thank goodness he's able to keep fluids down and wants them. I give him the a sip from the hospital mug I used when I was pregnant with Julia.

We go back to our room. I offer to snuggle with Sam, but he aches and prefers the stillness of the bed. He snuggles with his plastic shark, Lucy. I tuck his sister's puppy up close for warmth. He's still shaking. But he's able to fall asleep - getting a break from the hours and hours he'd been coughing. I hold his hand. We wait. And then we wait some more.

Two nurses come in and explain the nose swabs they are going to do. Sam trembles from fear. He whimpers "Mommy" as I hold him down for the task of squirting water up his nose and retrieving the sample. It wasn't enough. It takes three of us to hold him down. They hose slips off and they have to do it again. He was so brave. Braver than I would have been if someone wanted to stick a swab that far back.

They bring him a superman balloon. "Is that an S Mama?" Yes. Do you you know who Superman is? "No" Oh my sweet sweet sheltered boy. I hate that we're there. I want him to be better. I want him to be able to stop coughing and for his heart to slow down. They offer him a Popsicle. They can't believe he's never had one. He defers to me when they ask him what flavor. I say I think he'll like the orange one. They bring him a red one. He loves it.

The fever reducers start to work and he perks up a bit. He wants to go home. I tell him we have to wait some more to find out what's wrong with him. RSV? Influenza? My memory gets fuzzy here (I've only slept 3-4 hours in the past 48 hours) but I think the doc came in to say that that we had to wait on the test before we could know how to treat him. Whatever the actual order of events - it was a long wait. Every time someone would leave the room it would be 20 minutes before we saw someone again. That's a long time for a little guy who's exhausted and sick.

PapaBear had said I could call anytime. I still didn't know anything and it was already after 11pm at this point. Almost two hours into our ER visit and all he's had is some meds I could have given him at home. Wave of second guessing rolls in. Tears roll down Sam's face as we wait for the doctor to come back. He and I talk options. Tamiflu is metioned as an option if it turns out to be influenza. I've never been more grateful for internet on my phone so I can look up Tamiflu side effects. He sees something in his lungs on the X-ray. Need to wait for the test results. The doc leaves. Sam cries some more. We look at maps on my phone. He likes to see New York City.

At 11:45 the doc returns to say that the tests were negative. I ask for his pulse ox to be retested to be sure that it has improved enough for us to go home. 95. We're good to go. We wait another 10 minutes for someone to come with discharge papers. Sam cries some more. "Why is there something in my lungs that is making me sick Mama?" I don't know baby but we're hear to find out how to make you better.

The nurse comes in with our blue folder of paperwork. I sign a couple of things. She tells us we can fill our prescriptions using the InstiMeds machine in the lobby. I have to ask her if there was an official diagnosis.

Pneumonia.

OK. Good to know!

We're out of there! But not very fast of course. Walking too fast make Sammy's tummy hurt. I fill our prescription in the futuristic and frankly, a little creepy, machine in the lobby. Sam coughs. The receptionist asks us to put a mask on him. We leave. I eat M&M's on the way home and drink ice cold coffee left over from the morning. It's 12:45 in the morning when we get home.

I felt terrible that PapaBear was in the dark the whole time we were gone. I kept thinking about calling him, but never really knew anything until we were walking out the door. I get Sam tucked into his bed and have a light bulb moment about my sleeping arrangements. Sam's room is TINY but we have a crib mattress that will fit on the floor. I slept like a baby on it. Ha! I wish. I do think I slept through a lot of his coughing, but I know that it was a comfort to Sam to know that he could ask me for anything in the middle of the night. He would call out "Mama?" and then say "Just checking to see if you were in here" I tell him that I will stay in his room with him until he feels better. He tells me he loves me more than Daddy.

Last week he told me he loved Daddy more. Now we're even. But not really. I don't keep score. I can't these days or I'll go mad. PapaBear spends WAY more time with the kids than I do. I focus on quality since I'm not getting the quantity. This week I'm getting quantity and quality with my son. I wish it were under different circumstances. It does my heart good to know that he knows I will be there for him when he needs me. Sometimes I worry that he's not sure about that since I leave for work so much.

We 'sleep' until 9 this morning. I prepare his meds and we decide to set up camp in my bedroom. Less germs spread around the house that way. I called for a follow up appointment and get in at a clinic I've never been to before. I felt it was important for us to see a pediatrician today and not a family practitioner. I liked Dr. S right away. I told her that she was the very first doctor Sam saw in the hospital when he was born, but it was by mistake. Her practice was 40 miles from our house. We were suppose to be seen by the doctor 1 mile from our house. She didn't skip a beat. She said, "So Sam, how've you been since I saw you last?" I told you I liked her!

We talked medical history (once again wished I had been better about filling out the medical notebooks!) and we decided to do another chest X-ray to make sure that he wasn't getting worse. His pulse ox was in the mid 90's but his color was terrible. He could barely stand to be weighed. Thankfully the x-ray showed that he wasn't getting any worse so we could go home and not to the hospital. After last night, Sam isn't all that excited about a trip to the hospital. We picked up a second prescription for another antibiotic - we're going to hit this from all directions she said. I vowed to get a full dose of acidophilus in him tomorrow. No more mixing it in his Cream Of Wheat. This time it's going into one spoonful of applesauce and going down all at once. He'll thank me later. Or maybe not.

So that brings us to tonight. His cough isn't as frequent, but he can't keep his temp below 103 without Motrin. We are suppose to call the clinic in the morning to check in.

I want to say thank you again to everyone who's prayed for our special little guy. Any sickness whether it's a cold or something much more serious is hard for a mom to watch her child suffer through. It's nice to know that others were thinking of us - somewhere out there - as the title of Sam's favorite song says.

25 Days of Christmas Ornaments - Day 25


Twenty-five days of memories! Oh how I will love looking back on these pages in my blog book some day! Thanks for joining me on this adventure! It sure has been fun!

There wasn't a whole lot of rhyme or reason to which ornaments I chose to write about and I had no idea which one I would use for the grand finale...until I saw the picture of this one. It is so simple, yet so detailed.

Kinda like that night long ago.... A simple couple came to Bethlehem to be registered and yet all the details were set in place by God.








Today is Christmas and for most of us that means a day spent opening gifts and enjoying the company of family. I pray that we will always remember the words on the sign my friend Karen gave me for Christmas last year:

25 Days of Christmas Ornaments - Day 16

I'm finally getting into the swing of this vacation thing. My mind is still running a mile a minute but I've been able to slow down in the evenings and PapaBear and I even enjoyed a day/night away by ourselves on Monday and Tuesday. We managed to find the CUTEST wooden dinosaur ornaments for the kids and I can't wait to see them hung on our tree. I don't know about you, but I definetely have enough ornaments to do another 25 days of Christmas ornaments for next year (and probably the year after that!) But first, the ornament for today:

This one is from Sam's first Christmas. He was baptized the first week in December for a couple of reasons. First being, he had to be small enough to fit in the 100 year old baptism gown that my grandma's dad was baptized in (as well as my grandma, my mom, and I). Secondly, our church looks so pretty all decorated for Christmas.

This ornament symbolizes the day we vowed before God to teach Samuel (though his name was spelled Smuel in the bulliten that day) about our Savior and to commit to setting a Godly example for him.

Looking to the future

There wasn't anything good playing on the radio while I drove home this afternoon so I popped in a Christmas CD. (It was that or kids songs) The second "Deck the Halls" came on my chest started to tighten, tears pricked my the corners of my eyes.

It was instant.

It was scary.
I quickly turned the music off.

I regrouped. I prayed.

I counted my blessings.

God never gives us more than we can handle.

As I look forward to an incredibly busy time for my blog book business with Christmas deadlines just around the corner, I am thankful that God has provided a way to support our family.

But I think I'll hold off on "White Christmas" for a while yet.

"We live in a campground"


















When will I learn that I cannot explain our living situation with with that statement? People either think we have a canvas roof over our heads every night or they think I'm kidding.

At the campfire stories program on Saturday night I had the opportunity to talk to a family that showed a great deal of interest in our caretaker position. I never tire of explaining how our job works or how we were blessed with this wonderful life. If you are interested in reading the posts that have to do with our life in the park, search "park life" and all the posts related to living here will pop up.

In a nutshell...My sister-in-law's friend knew we were looking for park and recreation jobs and told Sharon about this gig when she saw it in the paper. We applied back in March of 2008. Went through the interview process and within 20 minutes of walking out of our first interview we were called back for the second one.

God is good. He is faithful and provided for our family in such an amazing way!!

We check in campers, take reservations, lock and unlock the gate, rent shelters, check restrooms, rent cross country skis, work in the office etc....

The perks far outweigh the hassle of being at the beck and call of 200 people every weekend. We walk out our backdoor and have hundreds of acres to explore and the walk to the campfire program?

It takes 60 seconds.

Watching the sun set behind the campground every night is a tough job, but someone has to do it - thankfully we do it with a real roof over our heads and not a canvas one.

I'm tired

I'm tired.

Tired of not getting very much sleep.

Tired of always feeling behind in my blog designing.

Tired of being behind in responding to emails and quote requests.

Tired of the humidity.

Tired of working all the time.

Tired of saying "see ya later!" to the kids.

Tired.

Plain and (not so) simple tired.

It was a good day

because Julia and I enjoyed a rare lunch date.
because Julia p**ped in the p*tty.
because I was able to go to the chiropractor again after a year.
because PapaBear was able to see a chiropractor for the first time.
because five minutes after saying I really should learn PowerPoint, I discovered that our local library does (free) one-on-one computer tutoring.
because it was 60 degrees and sunny out.
because we could decide at the last second to attend a baseball game being played across the street from the library.
because the camping season hasn't started yet so we could be out as family past 4pm.
because despite missing her nap & dinner, Julia was well behaved at the grocery store.
because we had lemon poppyseed muffins, bananas, & strawberries and called it dinner.
because we had good old fashioned fun at home - tag, twirling, races...



but most of all it was a good day because Stellan made it through his risky heart procedure that so many prayed through.

Not Me Monday - Stellan Style

It crossed my mind to skip Not Me's this week. Like I said in an email to a blogging friend, it didn't seem right to do a post linking to MckMama without it being about Stellan. I thought about admitting all the things I did this week as I tried to be a friend to MckMama, but gave up the idea because I was scared it would sound to uppity coming from a in real life friend even though there were times I was very overwhelmed and felt like I was letting everyone down .

Seeing that Emily is hosting Not Me Monday - Stellan Style, I decided that it would OK to talk about how hard this past week has been.

I (don't) feel heaps of guilt just writing that since any of my troubles pale in comparison to what MckMama has dealt with in the past 7 days.

I (didn't) spend 3 days returning emails from people who wanted to reach out and offer their support in anyway to my best friend.

I (didn't) hope that I could catch up for even a few hours at a time. Not me!

It (didn't) take me up to two days to return some of those emails. Nope. I'm faster than that.

Then, I (didn't) miss some people who had to email me multiples times to get the contact information. Nope. Not me!

I did (not) have to ask for personal information from kind, well meaning folks who just didn't happen to have a profile linked to their email. Nope. I would never be so bold as to ask people to verify who they are just because someone out there thought it would be fun to impersonate me on another blog. That did not freak me out one bit.
Nope.
I'm above that nonsense.

I am (not) mad at myself for not thinking of it sooner, but I now have a much faster way of writing back to people who request MckMama's information. Not me! I'm efficient from the get-go!

I did not weep and shake my way through tweeting and posting when I learned that Stellan was in Vtach.

I have (not) felt inadequate to answer questions about MckMama's food likes and dislikes.

I have (not) been singing Sunday School songs all week as a way to lift Stellan up to God. Nope. Not me!

I have (not) felt helpless, relieved, frightened, mad, scared, and peaceful all in a matter of hours. Not me!

I am (not) bummed that I didn't take the time to make sure I got a 'keeper' the last time I saw Stellan.

I'm (not) posting them anyway just to see his sweet face when I log on.


Yet those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary. Isaiah 40:31

Is this what Easter Means?

We don't make a big deal out of the Easter Bunny around here, but we do take the kids to the Mall for a picture if our schedule allows.

They were very brave and thankfully the staff allows parents to take two pictures with their own cameras so it didn't cost a penny. Our entire outing to the mall was free since PapaBear packed PB&J, grapes, snow peas, cheese and Rycrisps, and water for our lunch.

It's such a long drive for us to go into 'town' that it helps to avoid eating fast food when we can. Gas alone makes us plan a bunch of errands for each trip.









Anyway, after some snuggles with the Bunny and each other, we ate lunch, played at Playland, and were on our way.




We also dye eggs every year. A memory making tradition that Grandma & Grandpa join us for (the first link is to 2007 and this one is 2008.)

The game of Life

The kids have been enjoying our collection of 30 board games lately since outdoor playtime has been very limited this winter. Sam's favorites are CandyLand & Chutes & Ladders. My 30 year old version of CandyLand has seen better days so I turned to Craigslist to see if anyone was getting rid of board games. Sure enough, I was able to meet a lady in a parking lot and buy 4 games for $10. They are in perfect condition...er...they were in perfect condition until Julia got a hold of them. She's not known for being careful with game pieces. Our Hi-Ho Cherrio game is a wreck thanks to her, but it's still one of my favorite ones to play as a family because whatever little Miss Julia is doing with her tree, bucket, or cherries has no bearing on the game.



PapaBear dug Sorry out of the closet the other day and with some modifications, Sam thought it was fun to play. To keep them busy while we did our couples devotional one night, I let them play with Battleship & Life. They loved it! I look forward to lots of game nights as a family.



There are so many lessons to be learned from playing board games:
A person can't be the best (happy) all the time, but we can still have a good attitude.
One minute you might be 5 spaces away from the Candy Castle, but getting the Candy Cane (laid off) will send you right back where you started.

Teamwork

PapaBear and I joke that he and I wouldn't have been friends in high school if we'd known each other. He was almost 25 when we met and I was 21 so we weren't the same people we were as teenagers. We aren't exactly opposites, but the common stereotypical differences between men and women hold true in our relationship.

One of the good things about being different is that we have different strengths. I can fall back to sleep even after going out in the cold early in the morning to unlock the gate. He doesn't mind going out in the dark to drive through the park and lock up.

On the weekends during the summer, someone else opens the gate, but in the winter that job falls completely on our shoulders.

When I drive past our house and see my tracks out to the gate I don't cringe at the thought of the next time I have to set my alarm for 6:45 on a Saturday or Sunday morning - instead I smile and thank God for blessing me with a husband like PapaBear.



Looking for a new job is never fun, but he's not letting it get him down. He's helping out SO much at home so I can focus on my freelance work. He called me the other day to ask a couple questions about the Beef Barley Soup recipe we use and I about cried. Without being asked, he took it upon himself to make one of our favorite meals.

He plays with the kids all day long. Honestly, it makes me a little sad that the kids prefer to play with him now. Not jealous sad, but sad that I haven't been good at playing with them like I should be. Sam has a specific way he likes to play 'boats & fish" and with his race cars that I just don't get, but PapaBear does. They play for hours at a time.

PapaBear has been checking in with the employment agency and is filling out a park maintenance position application with a local park district. Those jobs are very competitive since they don't become available very often and the pay and benefits are so good. Thank you for your continued prayers as we seek God's will. One door that He has opened is the opportunity to trade even more of our housing expenses for our experience doing park programing. We meet with the the parks coordinator and his boss next Wednesday to see if we can come to an agreement that benefits all of us. I'm just as nervous for that meeting as I was for the meeting that determined whether we got the caretaker position.

This post took me almost a week to write since it's important that I spend my computer time wisely (read: focusing on paying projects). I do use twitter, so you can always read the breaking Bear Country News there. I'll be back to blogging every day just as soon as I get about 300 blog book pages designed. Thanks for your patience!

Wordless Wednesday - Photographer for hire



I swear I had this picture picked out before PapaBear called me a few minutes ago to tell me that he lost his job. Tomorrow is his last day. Even if they hadn't laid off all the temps, the plant is going to three days a week which wouldn't be enough hours to support our family.

I'm pretty shell shocked at the moment, but when the reality sinks in, we'll be clinging to these verses from Philippians 4:6-7, 11-13:

Don't worry about anything, instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus....Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to get along happily whether I have much or little. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything with the help of Christ who gives me the strenght I need.
